Book excerpt: Growing from their early roots in Caribbean voodoo to their popularity today, zombies are epidemic. Their presence is pervasive, whether they are found in video games, street signs, hard drives, or even international politics. These eighteen original essays by an interdisciplinary group of scholars examine how the zombie has evolved over time, its continually evolving manifestations in popular culture, and the unpredictable effects the zombie has had on late modernity. Topics covered include representations of zombies in films, the zombie as environmental critique, its role in mass psychology and how issues of race, class and gender are expressed through zombie narratives. Collectively, the work enhances our understanding of the popularity and purposes of horror in the modern era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zombies first shuffled across movie screens in 1932 in the low-budget Hollywood film White Zombie and were reimagined as undead flesh-eaters in George A. Romero’s The Night of the Living Dead almost four decades later. Today, zombies are omnipresent in global popular culture, from video games and top-rated cable shows in the United States to comic books and other visual art forms to low-budget films from Cuba and the Philippines. The zombie’s ability to embody a variety of cultural anxieties—ecological disaster, social and economic collapse, political extremism—has ensured its continued relevance and legibility, and has precipitated an unprecedented deluge of international scholarship. Zombie studies manifested across academic disciplines in the humanities but also beyond, spreading into sociology, economics, computer science, mathematics, and even epidemiology. Zombie Theory collects the best interdisciplinary zombie scholarship from around the world. Essays portray the zombie not as a singular cultural figure or myth but show how the undead represent larger issues: the belief in an afterlife, fears of contagion and technology, the effect of capitalism and commodification, racial exclusion and oppression, dehumanization. As presented here, zombies are not simple metaphors; rather, they emerge as a critical mode for theoretical work. With its diverse disciplinary and methodological approaches, Zombie Theory thinks through what the walking undead reveal about our relationships to the world and to each other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the author argues that blood was, crucially, a means by which dramatists negotiated shifting contours of domesticity in 16th and 17th century England. Early modern English drama vividly addressed contemporary debates over an expanding idea of "the domestic," which encompassed the domus as well as sex, parenthood, household order, the relationship between home and state, and the connections between family honor and national identity. The author contends that the domestic ideology expressed by theatrical depictions of marriage and household order is one built on the simultaneous familiarity and violence inherent to blood. The theatrical relation between blood and home is far more intricate than the idealized language of the familial bloodline; the home was itself a bloody place, with domestic bloodstains signifying a range of experiences including religious worship, sex, murder, birth, healing, and holy justice. Focusing on four bleeding figures—the Bleeding Bride, Bleeding Husband, Bleeding Child, and Bleeding Patient—the author argues that the household blood of the early modern stage not only expressed the violence and conflict occasioned by domestic ideology, but also established the home as a site that alternately reified and challenged patriarchal authority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the current moment--polarized populations, increasing climate fears, and decline of supranational institutions in favor of a rising tide of nationalisms-- it is easy to understand the proliferation of apocalyptic and dystopian elements in popular culture. Infected Empires examines one of the most popular figures in contemporary apocalyptic film: the zombie. This harbinger of apocalypse reveals bloody truths about the human condition, the wounds of history, and methods of contending with them. Infected Empires considers parallels in the zombie genre to historical and current events on different political, theological and philosophical levels, and proposes that the zombie can be read as a figure of decolonization and an allegory of resistance to oppressive structures that racialize, marginalize, disable, and dispose of bodies. Studying films from around the world, including Latin America, Asia, Africa, the US, and Europe, Infected Empires presents a vision of a global zombie that points toward a posthuman and feminist future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a hard, penetrating look at the despondent heart of darkness of the 1990s, The Death Proclamation of Generation X is a probing chronicle of America's thirteenth generation caught between the idealistic Baby Boomers and the well-financed Generation Y. Generation X was scapegoated and dismissed without the chance to prove themselves. Blending tenets of psychology, sociology, and cultural anthropology, author Maxim Furek offers a unique perspective to the post-modernist discourse by exploring the impact that personalities such as Andrew Wood, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, River Phoenix, Marilyn Manson, and Anna Nicole Smith left on that generation. Evaluating the psychological and sociological variables of goth, grunge, and heroin, Furek weaves a dark tapestry of this unique demographic group born between 1965 and 1978. The Death Proclamation of Generation X pieces together the complexities of Generation X to acknowledge their individuality, honor their existence, and to celebrate their future. They are a group with their own identity of music, attitude, and culture. The resilience of Generation X is but another example of the power of this special collection of people-a group of highly skilled and adaptive individuals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen a renewed interest in the phenomenon of abstract art, particularly regarding its ability to speak to the political, social, and cultural conditions of our times. This collection of essays, which looks at historical examples of artistic practice from the early pioneers of abstraction to late modernism, investigates the ambivalent role that abstraction has played in the visual arts and cultures of the last hundred years. In addition, it explores various theoretical and critical narratives that seek to articulate new perspectives on its legacy in the visual arts. From metaphysical considerations and philosophical reflections to debates on interculturality and global perspectives, the contributors examine and reconsider abstraction in the visual arts from a contemporary point of view that acknowledges the many social, economic, cultural, and political aspects of artistic practice. As such, the volume progressively expands the boundaries of thinking about abstract art by engaging it in its increasingly diverse cultural environment.

He juxtaposes the Biblical Christ with His blonde, flag-draped, machine-gun-toting American incarnation in “Jesus vs. Jeezus,” proposes a third political party that represents Americans’ real values in “The Sex Party,” draws the dead Saddam Hussein as a mischievous invisible imp still causing trouble, and envisions the officials of the Bush administration getting their comeuppance in the grisly fashion of Dick Tracy villains. And he finds two cartoons’ worth of “Reasons to Look Forward to the Next Terrorist Attack.” Also included is his infamous entry into Iran’s Holocaust cartoon contest, “Silver Linings of the Holocaust.”

Book excerpt: The video nasties scare was one of the more memorable, and unbelievable, media sensations of the 1980s. The influx of cheap foreign sex and gore shockers outraged the tabloids and the chattering classes, and led ultimately to the Video Recordings Act, which made Britain's already strict censorship laws some of the strongest in Europe. John Martin runs down the whys and wherefores of the entire scandal, and categorises the nasties, from Absurd! to Zombie Creeping Flesh.
